Overview

Uncasville is part of the town of Montville in Connecticut. It encompasses a large portion of the town, which includes the Mohegan reservation and most of the eastern part of Montville. Surprisingly, unlike most places in the US, it was a Native American sachem named Uncas who first established the area as a fort in the 17^th century. It was designed to defend his people from the Pequot tribe. Still, when the settlers arrived, Uncas welcomed them with open arms, allowing them to live in peace on Mohegan lands and even extending to them the security of his fort. Thus, it is not surprising at all that when the settlers did expand and established the land, they would choose the name Uncasville in honor of Uncas.
